Company Overview
Exxelis is UK-based provider of novel optical materials and solutions,
targeting high volume display applications in laptops, mobile handsets
and LCD TVs. This builds on our existing expertise in polymer materials
and optical interconnects which are now at the production stage.
In optical components and systems, the team is comprised of technology
start-up veterans with over 20 years of experience in marketing
and sales in Taiwan and R&D in UK. Our Chairman founded a fabless
IC company which was sold in early 2000 for over £100M. The
company has several key advisers, including the head of the UK Displays
Network.
Liquid Crystal Displays are the dominant technology in cell-phones,
laptops, PC monitors and flat screen TVs, with $Bns invested in
materials & fabrication plants. The company is developing microstructured
light-guide films which address the key issues of cost, performance,
size & weight for LCD backlight modules. The company has also
developed a custom optical film for a portable gaming console, which
is due to enter production in 2006.
This technology is based on several years of polymer materials
development at Heriot-Watt University. The company operates on a
“fabless” basis, using existing materials and module
manufacturers. It has its own R&D / pilot production facility
located in an opto-electronic science park in Scotland, where the
TruecoatTM embossing technology was developed.
It has already engaged with customers worldwide and is generating
early revenue for samples and joint developments. The company has
established relationship with many of the top tier display companies,
located in Asia.
